A Second Scrappy Log Cabin Heart

I decided to create a second version of my Scrappy Log Cabin Heart block. Here's what the my quilt looks like with the two variations of the blocks.

Here's what the alternate version of the block looks like:

In order to make this block cut the following:

Background / Low Volume:
1 - 4 1/2 inch square
4  - 2 1/2 inch squares and draw a line diagonally across each

Various scrappy fabrics:
6 - 2 1/2 inch squares
3 - 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch rectangles
3 - 2 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch rectangles
1 - 2 1/2 x 10 1/2 inch rectagle
1 - 2 1/2 x 12 1/2 inch rectangle

Ready to start sewing?  All seams are 1/4 inch. Press as desired.  I tend to press to the darker fabric.

  1. Sew 2 piece 2 - 2 1/2 inch squares together and press the seams.
  2. Sew 2 more 2 - 2 1/2 inch squares together and press.

  5. Sew 1 - 2 1/2 inch square to a 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch strip press.
  6. Repeat with the last 2 1/2 inch x 4 1/2 inch strip and press.
  7. Sew 1 - 2 1/2 x 6 1/2 strip to the top of the 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 strip you just sewed  to the 2 1/2 inch square in step 6 and press.
  8. Take 1 - 2 1/2 inch square of your background fabric and place it right sides together on the top left corner of the pieces you just sewed together in step 7.  Sew on the diagonal line. Trim to 1/4 inch and press up.
  9. Sew the 4 1/2 inch square of background fabric to the left side of the pieces sewn together in step 8.
  10. Sew the other 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 strip you sewed to the 2 1/2 inch square to the left side of the 4 2/12 inch square sewn to the 4 1/2 by 2 1/2 strip and press.
  11. Sew 1 - 2 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch strip to the left  of the pieces sewn together in step 10 and press.
  12. Sew 1 - 2 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch strip to the right of the pieces sewn together in step 11 and press.
  13. Take another 2 1/2 inch square of your background fabric place right sides together on the upper left corner of the pieces sewn together in step 12,  sew on the diagonal line, trim to 1/4 inch and press up.
  14. Sew the group of pieces with the 4 1/2 inch square of background fabric sewn together in step 9 to the top of the group of pieces sewn together in step 13.
  15. Sew the 2 1/2 x 10 1/2 inch strip to the bottom of all of the piece sewn together in step 14 and press.
  16. Take another 2 1/2 inch square of your background fabric place right sides together on the bottom left corner of the pieces sewn together in step 15,  sew on the diagonal line, trim to 1/4 inch and press.
  17. Sew 1 - 2 1/2 x 12 1/2 inch strip to the left of your heart and press
  18. Take the last 2 1/2 inch square of background fabric, place right side together over the upper right hand corner of the heart. sew on the diagonal line, trim to 1/4 inch, and press up.
Your heart should now be complete and measure at 12 1/2 inches square so it will finish at 12 inches in a quilt.
