Gears - Crayola Colors Of Kindness - A Twist on Using Panels

 Hi Makers! 

 I am here today to share with a fun modification of my Gears quilt that I made using the newest Crayola licensed collection, Colors of Kindness. It is a wonderfully whimsical inspiring collection filled with inspiration sayings, darling graphics and bright and cheery colors. It's a collection full of the inspiration we all love when a box of any Crayola product is place in front of us even as adult as it brings back memories of when we were a child.

The Colors of Kindness includes three panels in the collection. I used two of the panels in the modified Gears Quilt.

 

I used the Kindness Cards panel to cut up and use as the center of the Gears blocks. I attempted two different methods of dissecting the the panel.

The first method, I used an 8.5-inch ruler and attempted to fussy cut a grouping of four kindness cards together to use as the center section of the block.

To quote Dan Fogelberg from the song, "Changing Horses", Changing horses in the middle of a stream get you wet... That's what happened to me. I just wasn't thrilled with the way it looked and felt as if to much fabric was being wasted and the blocks were not lining up as I wanted. Therefore, I decided to very carefully cut apart the individual kindness cards. The quilt is going to be used as a nap quilt for the almost two year old this fall at daycare and she's not particulate about there being two different centers to the blocks. She just like to snuggle with quilts (all the quilts, at the same time - LOL).

This was a tad tricky and took patience, but I think the finished blocks were well worth the extra time. I then used 1.5-inch strips to sew together the cards to create a 8.5-inch center for each block. A little window into kindness.

I made each block using the various Colors of Kindness Dots and the center block using Colors of Kindness Crayons.

The large Throw Kindness Around Like Confetti Panel with various colors of RBD basics became the back of the quilt. The remaining Dots became a scrappy and colorful binding.

Box of Hearts with Farmhouse Summer

 I have a fun remake of my Box of Hearts quilt pattern. The hearts have been super sized and the half square triangles on the corners have been eliminated for this version. The quilt was made using Farmhouse Summer by Echo Park for Riley Blake Designs. 

Farmhouse Summer is filled with summer blooms in red, pink, denim, white, and gold. The panel is full of wonderful images and sayings and reminds me of hanging out with friends and family on my parents screened in back porch. 

I chose to have the hearts in my version to face in various directions so that when we are snuggling with the quilt nobody feels like they have the upside down side – LOL!

I worked the panel into the backing of the quilt because those memories are so special. Bonus this make the quilt a reversible quilt.

HourGlass Patchwork Quilt - Featuring Poppy Cotton's My Favorite Things

Hi Makers!

I have a fun versatile pattern for you today.  This is my newest pattern that I am calling the HourGlass Quilt.  It's the perfect pattern to be used as a Chemo Quilt or a smaller version for a baby quilt.

I used an entire Fat Quarter Bundle of Poppie Cottons' newest collection, My Favorite Things, 
to make the 55 x 60 inch lap quilt and backed it with flannel. I did not use any background fabric, however if you's like to make the quilt larger and use the FQB, I suggest using a background fabric for you hour glasses.. 

The quilt is easily broken down into two blocks. I made 6 of each block and then added a patch work border to the left and right side of the quilt. 

How to make a quarter square triangle: 

This is my favorite method, using half square triangle, however you are welcome to make your QSTs in the method of your choosing: 

Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of one background  squares {A}. Layer a marked square on an unmarked  print square {A}, right sides together. Sew 1/4" from both sides of the drawn line. Cut the unit apart on the marked line to make two half-square-triangle units. Press Open toward the darker print.

Place the HST's from the previous step with right sides together.  Be sure to nest your seams and that the prints are facing in the opposite directions.  Draw a line from corner to corner opposite of the seamed line.   Sew 1/4" from both sides of the drawn line. Cut the unit apart on the drawn line. Press open and for this pattern trim the QSTs to 5 1/2".
 

Block 1: 

Cutting:

Pink Print - [2] 6.5-inch squares for QSTs

Low Volume Print 1 - [2] 6.5-inch squares for QSTs

Low Volume Print 2 -  [1] 6.5-inch squares for center QSTs you will hav an extra for a second block

Yellow Print -  [1] 6.5-inch squares for center QSTs you will hav an extra for a second block

Tan Print - [2] 5.5-inch squares

Red Print - [2] 5.5-inch squares

Follow the chart above and make six 15.5-inch squares.

Block 2: 

Cutting:

Teal Print - [2] 6.5-inch squares for QSTs

Pink Print [2] 6.5-inch squares for QSTs

Low Volume Print - [1] 5.5-inch squares for center 

Yellow Print - [2] 5.5-inch squares

Red Print - [2] 5.5-inch squares

Follow the chart above and make six 15.5-inch squares.

Assembling the quilt:

Alternate the block one and two for each row.

Example: 

Rows 1 & 3 will have a Block 1, Block 2, and Block 1

Rows 2 & 4 will have Block 2, Block 1 and Block 2

At this point the quilt top will measure 45 x 60-inches.

To make the quilt top slightly wider I cut an addition [24] 5.5-inch squares. sews together two columns of twelve and sewed these additional columns to the left and right sides of the quilt top. 

If you choose, you may have all your QST's facing the same direction and give the quilt a different look.

RBD - At First Sight - Project Tour Plaid Stars Quilt

 Hi Makers!

I am so happy to share with you this very soft and romantic project, Plaid Stars Quilt.  

The quilt was created using the stunning new collection by Dani Mogstad, At First Sight. This romantic collection has a color palette of seafoam, blush, cream, pine, black, and coral. The fabric prints include florals, gemstone hearts, vines, strips, plaid, blossoms, and circles.

I chose to use the seafoam, blush, coral, pine, cream and a little pop of black.  

Using the dark and light versions of various prints created an interesting plaid affect with stars intermixed in the plaid and White Sparkler cotton as the background. The quilt was backed with some baby pink kisses.

This busy grandma is off to snuggle with my version of this quilt, my favorite two month old and two year old girls. Here's hoping the two year old will take a nap before mommy and daddy get home.

Riley Blake Blog Tour - Emma - Quadrille Dance Quilt

 Hi Makers!

I am excited to share with you a new quilt made with a lovely new fabric collection. Emma was designed by Rachel Erickson of Citrus & Mint Designs The collection was inspired by the move Emma which was inspired by the novel by Jane Austen. This wonderful collection is a celebration of all this Jane Austen with fancy balls, walks in the garden, Georgian Era decor and stunning empire-wasted gowns. This inspired floral prints, swallows, ditzy prints with a sprinkle of tiny flowers, couples dancing, houses, and birdcages. These prints are done in dreamy color palette of honey, cream, mint, rose, pink and yellow.

The Quadrille Dance Quilt was inspired by the ballroom dance of the era in which Emma takes place. The dance was fashionable in ballrooms during the 1800’s for four couples to dance in square formation. It was actually the predecessor of the American Square Dance. The blocks attempt to mimic the movements of the couples as they dance. Placed together it’s as if you are on the balcony of the ballroom watching all the groups of couple dance.

I chose to use the house ditzy, main and birdcage prints in mint, rose, cream and pink. To give the quilt some added dimension fr the ballroom floor I used Vintage White Kisses as the background fabric and borders with Shades in Tutu. In addition to make this quilt ready to snuggle under during the winter months and watch a Jane Austen inspired movie I used two layers of batting.

Riley Blake Project Tour - Christmas Village & Crossed Stars Quilt

Hi Makers!  I am ready to start my Christmas sewing a little bit early this year.

I had the privilege of being able to work with Katherine Lenius' new Christmas collection, Christmas Village. 

Christmas village is based on Katherine's memory of helping set the her mom's little magical Christmas Village and the memories of that wonderful little world and fond Christmas memories. The collections main fabric is the Village, along with complimentary prints of Snow globes, Pretty Presents, Winter Blooms, trees, windows, snowflakes, & angels. The color pallet includes sea glass, pink, green, denim, red, and off white.  

I choose to work with a couple of pink, green, sea glass, and off white prints along with Riley Blake's Shades in Santa as the back ground and backed my quilt in red Blossoms. A scrappy binding of the various prints made for a fun finish.

Crossed Stars is a fun and fast quilt to make with large blocks and no sashing. The pattern is available in my Etsy shop.

Riley Blake Project Tour - Picadilly – Cap’s New Shield

I am back to share with you a fun new collection from Amanda Castor of Material Girl Quilts. Picadilly celebrates summer in America and is named after Amanda’s father’s home on Picadilly Court in Indiana. The collection is of course red, white and blue. It features bandana type prints, gingham, fireworks, orange peal, dots, stars, and strips.

I happen to have a couple of grandsons who are superhero obsessed. There’s one in particular of which they are big fans. Although the eldest is now 13 years old and too cool to admit it, the 7 year old is still can tell you every thing about each superhero and their origins. I will admit that I don’t always pay attention to all the little details, but I do know there was a change. So, I thought that as a birthday gift it would be fun for the 7 year old to have a quilt with Grandma’s idea of a new shield for his hero.

So here is Cap’s New Shield…

This is a fun and quick quilt to make. It looks tricky, but it is all about twists and turns while placing the blocks. The pattern will be available soon in my Etsy shop if you’d like to make one for someone special in your life.

Reflections – Thistle Stars Remix

I'd like to share with you a remix of one of my favorite patterns, Thistle Stars. This quilt sitting in my garden along with the bitter cold temps and remaining snow is giving me a case of Spring Fever.

I am the type of maker that once I have made one pattern, I very rarely will ever remake that same pattern again as there are so many ideas in my artistic brain and only so much time.

When I saw Reflections by Lauren Brewer Designs, I knew that I needed to make a new version my Thistle Stars Quilt.

Just to make things interesting, I decided to mix it up by eliminating the sashing, adding 3 rounds of borders, and then binding the quilt with my favorite fabrics from the collection.

Eliminating the sashing creating a very interesting secondary block and I am a sucker for a quilt with a secondary block design.

The collection, Reflections, has beautiful floral prints in yellow, teal, parchment, pink, green, red, navy and seafoam. Along with the four floral prints, there is a darling clover leaf blender and a a sweet cherry print.

I had fun playing with the pinks, navy blues, teal, parchment and a dash of yellow.

I also thought that the florals and the pinks looked very pretty with these antiques.
